Newcastle Future Transit Corridor location decided

A decision has been taken on the location of the Newcastle Future Transit Corridor between the Newcastle Interchange and Broadmeadow, preserving the route for future transport links.
Transport for NSW has confirmed the corridor will link the Newcastle Interchange at Newcastle West and the Broadmeadow precinct via Tudor Street.
The decision follows extensive investigations by Transport for NSW and community consultation as part of the Hunter Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan (SRITP), which ended on 28 February.
Transport for NSW Regional Director Anna Zycki said protecting the corridor is vital.
“This is a critical step towards providing for the future transport needs of Newcastle and its growing population,” Ms Zycki said.
“This decision ensures we can plan for the transport needs of growing communities, businesses, and industries - who all rely on different transport modes.
“Identifying the route now allows for land use planning and development to proceed with certainty.
“It means that when the time comes for the infrastructure to be built, that can happen more quickly and easily.
“It also provides the community with certainty for the future, so residents, businesses and other stakeholders can plan their future activities and investment in line with this decision.
“The corridor preservation is part of planning for the projected growth in the Broadmeadow precinct, which is expected to see population growth of up to 40,000 with an estimated 20,000 new homes and 15,000 jobs over the coming decades.”
A section of the Newcastle Future Transit Corridor, near the Newcastle Interchange, will be protected by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI). This section will be referred to as the Newcastle Future Infrastructure Corridor. An explanation of the intended effect is currently on exhibition to support protection of the corridor, with more information available at https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects/current-projects/newcastle-future-transit-corridor
