Lower Hunter Urban Design Awards

At the Lower Hunter Urban Design Awards held on the 5 September at Tempus Two wineries, local architect, Chris McBriarty was a major winner, picking up three awards.
The New Lambton residence she designed, beat eighteen other finalists across five categories to take home the UrbanGrowth NSW Urban Design Excellence Award.
According to jury co-chair Kayla Volker from Cessnock City Council it is rare for a residential project to take out the top honour but that the jury was extremely impressed with the creative and clever thinking that went into all parts of the building’s design.
“It represents excellent design that is inextricably linked to the site and locality, responding to the landscape and existing built form, as well as providing a sustainable living environment.” she said.
The project also won the deWitt Consulting Residential Award and the Lindsay & Dynan Sustainability Award.
Other winners included City Of Newcastle for the Merewether Public Domain Improvements in the Citygreen Landscape and Public Art award, and the heritage award went to the Morpeth Courthouse Adaptive Reuse by Maitland City Council and John Carr.
The Raymond Terrace GP Super Clinic by Schreiber Hamilton Architecture and Peter Kemp won the GHD Large Scale Commercial Award and Universal Access Award, while Fletcher Community centre by EJE Architecture won the Small Scale Commercial award
The Hunter Development Corporate Student Prize awarded two thousand dollars to Newcastle University student Frank Verevakabah for his concepts for Cessnock City Council. The People’s Choice vote went the EJE Architecture’s Junction Residence.
